Let me be honest with you: do you actually need new pendant lights over your kitchen island? Probably not. And I say that as someone who just bought three of them.
Here's the thing. After two years renovating our kitchen — new cabinets, new countertops, new backsplash — I kept staring at the island and wondering why it still felt unfinished. Like something was quietly wrong with the whole room.
It was the lights. We had placeholder pendants from Amazon we threw up during the renovation. Too small, wrong finish, cord too short. They were dragging the whole room down and I couldn't see it until everything else was done.
So I went looking. I installed — and returned — four different sets before finding the ones I'm keeping. And because I went through all of that, I'm writing it up so you don't have to.
(I know five is a lot. But pendant lights over a kitchen island are a real commitment. You're looking at them every single day, and if you're buying three like I was, getting it wrong is expensive.)

How I Actually Tested These
I installed each pendant at the same location over my kitchen island — 9-foot ceilings, standard junction box, hung at 34 inches above the counter (the measurement most designers land on for 9-foot ceilings). I lived with each one for at least a week before forming a final opinion.
I photographed each one at three times of day: morning natural light, afternoon, and evening with the pendant on. My husband evaluated each one without knowing the brand. My sister — who works in interior design in Atlanta and has significantly better taste than I do — gave her verdict when she visited.
I also confirmed smart bulb compatibility for every pendant, because with five kids, being able to dim the kitchen from my phone at 7pm is not optional. It's how dinner happens.
My Non-Negotiables
- Looks as good in real life as in the listing photos
- G9 or E26 bulb fitting — must work with smart bulbs
- Dimmable with standard or smart dimmer
- Cord long enough for 9-foot ceilings (48 inches minimum)
- Bulb included — buying three pendants, I'm not placing a separate bulb order
- 30-day return policy with packaging I can actually reuse
- Durable enough for a family with five kids and a golden retriever
✓ Pros
- Genuinely hand-painted — visible in person
- Blue and white works with every kitchen style
- G9 bulb — full smart bulb compatibility
- Bulb included, no separate order
- 5-minute install with included canopy
- 30-day returns, excellent packaging
- Built to last 20+ years
✗ Cons
- Each piece is handmade — can take over a week to arrive
- Popular variants can sell out; order early
What I Love
The first thing I want to say is: the hand-painting is real. I've bought things that claim to be "handcrafted" and then you get them and they look like a machine made them in four seconds flat. The Ronja is not that. Each ceramic piece has visible brushstroke variation — the pattern is slightly different on each one. It sounds like it could look inconsistent but it looks exactly right. It has the imperfect quality that makes expensive pottery expensive.
The blue and white colorway (I got the Blue Daisy and Indigo Pebble variants) acts like a neutral. Soft cobalt on cream. My sister called it "the rare thing that works in any kitchen." She's right. It doesn't fight with dark cabinets, white Shaker kitchens, or wood-heavy spaces. It just belongs.
Install was genuinely five minutes. The canopy is pre-assembled. You connect two wires, cap them, mount the canopy to your junction box, hang the pendant. I did all three of mine in under twenty minutes while my kids were doing homework at the island.
The G9 bulb fitting means complete smart home compatibility. Our three Ronja pendants are now in our Philips Hue app. Kitchen goes from bright white for cooking to warm amber for dinner to off with one tap. I didn't know how much I'd use this until I had it.
What Could Be Better
Because each pendant is handmade, delivery can take over a week. If you're mid-renovation and counting days, order early — I placed ours three weeks before we needed them specifically because of this. The Blue Daisy variant was showing low stock when I ordered; if you love a specific pattern, don't wait.

✓ Pros
- Beautiful in person, high-quality glass
- Multiple finish options (brass, black, chrome)
- Well-known brand, reliable customer service
✗ Cons
- No bulb included — add $18–28 per pendant
- Higher true cost than listed price
- Glass is fragile; not ideal for family homes
- Strict return policy on original packaging
What I Love
The West Elm pendant is genuinely gorgeous. The sculptural glass shape photographs beautifully and looks expensive in person. My sister loved it. In a kitchen with modern finishes and no small children, it would be a knockout.
What Could Be Better
Two things kept it off the top spot. First, the bulb situation. West Elm lists the pendant starting at $149 — and then you realize bulbs aren't included. The fixture shape requires a specific bulb type, priced at $18–28 each. For three pendants, that's an extra $54–84 on top of an already-premium price. This needs to be disclosed more clearly.
Second: the glass. I have five kids and a golden retriever. A pendant made of thin sculptural glass is a liability I wasn't willing to accept. The Ronja's ceramic is in a completely different durability category.
The Short Version
Reasonable for the price, and it photographs well. But the cord is only 39 inches, which on 9-foot ceilings gave me a pendant that sat too high to feel proportional. The bulb isn't included, the return process was slow, and the hardware feels noticeably cheaper in person than the listing photos suggest. If you have 8-foot ceilings and a smaller island, it might work. For a kitchen you've invested in, keep looking.
The Short Version
I like IKEA. There's IKEA furniture in this house. But the SINNERLIG pendant at $39 looks like a $39 pendant. The bamboo shade isn't bad, but "bamboo shade" wasn't what I was going for over a kitchen island I spent two years renovating. The cord is 47 inches — technically enough for 9-foot ceilings but with zero flexibility. Dimmer compatibility is hit or miss. Fine for a rental or a temporary setup. Not for a kitchen you care about.
The Short Version
The listing photos looked promising. In person: the ceramic was noticeably thin (I tapped it — it rang hollow), the paint finish looked like a printed decal rather than actual painting, and the hardware had sharp edges I noticed immediately. The E27 fitting also doesn't match standard US bulbs without an adapter, which wasn't in the listing. I returned both within three days.
Why I Have Three Ronjas Over My Island
After all of this, here's what it came down to.
The Ronja was the only pendant that passed every test: looked exactly as good in real life as online, worked with our specific kitchen, came with a bulb, was smart-bulb compatible out of the box, installed in five minutes, and felt like something that would last twenty years rather than needing replacing in three.
On price: At $149.95, it's not the cheapest option here. But compare it to the West Elm at $149–199 plus $18–28 per bulb, and the Ronja is actually the better value once you do the math. And the hand-painted ceramic quality puts it in a completely different category than the $35–55 Amazon options.
On style: My sister — the Atlanta interior designer — called the blue and white colorway "the rare thing that works in any kitchen." That's a real compliment from someone who is hard to please. The hand-painted ceramic doesn't fight with your other finishes. It adds without competing.
On durability: BO-HA says these are built to last. I can't personally verify twenty years yet. But after three months with three of them above an active family kitchen — kids, homework, cooking, all of it — they look exactly the same as day one.
My mom is getting two for her dining room. My sister already texted me for the link. That's probably the most honest endorsement I can give.
