Over twelve years and five kids I've replaced every cute ceiling light that was adorable at three and hated at eight, and never the plain ones. The same $52 fixture in three rooms, and what changes at each birthday.

Nobody carrying a kid, a bag or a cooler should need a hand for a light. Four lit doors, a lit driveway, a lit path and a summer dining room for about $750, and the $36 of photocells that made it work without a switch.

The original light over our breakfast table was a bare builder bulb, harsh at 6:30 am. A $90 drum pendant, fifteen minutes to hang, and the kids who resisted breakfast now arrive at the table first. The best morning investment in twelve years.
