How We Organized the Garage for a Family of 7

A family of seven generates: 7 bikes (various sizes), 5 sports seasons worth of equipment, camping gear for 7, holiday decorations for every occasion, and a mysterious accumulation of balls. The garage was either a hazard or dead storage. We rebuilt it.

The System

Wall-mounted bike hooks for all seven bikes — they're vertical, off the floor, accessible. Sports equipment in labeled bins on heavy shelving by season: baseball season, soccer season, swim season, in and out each year. Camping gear on upper shelves. Holiday decor labeled by event in clear tubs on the highest shelves.

The Lighting

The original single-bulb fixture made the garage feel like a cave. We added two LED shop-style flush mounts at 4000K — cool white for maximum visibility. Every corner is now lit. The kids can actually find their gear without my help. This single change reduced "Mom where is my _____?" by approximately 40%.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you organize a garage for a large family?

Divide by category and frequency of use: high-frequency items (bikes, balls, everyday gear) at accessible heights; medium-frequency items (camping gear, holiday decorations) on upper shelves; rarely used items in the back corners. Use wall-mounted bike hooks to get bikes off the floor. Label everything with large, readable labels so kids can put things away correctly.

What shelving works best in a garage?

Heavy-duty wire shelving on wall-mounted tracks is the most flexible — shelves can be repositioned as storage needs change. Solid shelving at or below shoulder height for frequently accessed items, wire shelving above for lighter storage. Freestanding units work for renters; wall-mounted for permanent solutions. Avoid particleboard in humid climates — it warps.

How do you add lighting to a garage?

LED shop lights in 4-foot or 8-foot format provide the most efficient garage lighting. They hang from the ceiling with chains or direct-mount with included hardware. A 4000K or 5000K color temperature maximizes visibility for finding items. Wire them to a single switch at the door. Two 4-foot shop lights (4000 lumens each) handle a standard two-car garage.
